HOW TO BREAK IN RAW DENIM FAST
One of the most common questions we get is how do I break in raw denim? And you know what? It makes sense that someone would ask that.
For those who are new to the space, the difference between raw denim jeans and the more common mall brand jeans is that the product gets washed at the factory before you purchase it.
This is partly because when the jeans are being made, the denim has a lot of starch in it — this makes it easier to cut and sew.
But another reason most jeans get washed before you buy them is to simulate wear and tear: you probably know that most jeans aren’t as dark blue as raw denim, and this is because they’ve been washed with some chemicals to help pull out some of the dye and make them look and feel lived in. Even if your jeans are dark blue, there’s a decent chance they’ve been washed with a bunch of stones to beat up the fabric and make it feel softer.
But raw denim is stiff, starchy, and crisp — if you want them to get soft and worn in, you’ve got to wear them in yourself. And not unlike a new pair of boots, the first day you wear raw denim jeans is the most uncomfortable they’ll ever be!
There’s no need to worry: the jeans will soften up as you wear them, and with that process you’ll gain the pride of knowing that you and you alone are the reason they’re soft and comfortable and well loved.
Still, it’s understandable that you’d want to know if there’s anything extra you can do to speed up the break in process of your raw denim jeans. In fact, the question is so common that there are a lot of myths and misconceptions (and malpractices) when it comes to 'cheat codes' for breaking in raw denim quickly.
