FABRIC GUIDE

When developing a new product, or even a new collection, we usually start with the fabric. Some might think a new garment begins with sketch, but in our case the fabric sourcing often marks the beginning of the design process. Even though style and fit are equally as important, the fabric dictates the direction and not the other way around. In our fabric guide we’ve created a clear overview of all our core fabrics and more, denim and non-denim. You can easily browse through and check which styles are available in each fabric.

special #1 low tension 14 oz. RHT
100% cotton
origin: Collect Mills (Japan)
SHOP FABRIC

DESCRIPTION

Low tension 14 oz. RHT is our first proprietary fabric woven in Japan, also known as ‘special #1’. Weighing in at a versatile 14 oz. this is a perfect mid-weight denim for all-year-round wear. The low tension weave gives the denim a slightly looser structure, which shows an uneven weaving pattern and subtle slubs in the yarns. The selvedge ID is yellow & green; this represents the first stages of indigo-dyeing before it becomes the distinctive dark blue colour indigo is known for. This denim has been created exclusively for BENZAK by Collect Mills in Kojima, Japan, in 2016, and is one of our two core fabrics in the ‘made in Japan’ line.

heavy slub 16 oz. RHT
100% cotton
origin: Collect Mills (Japan)

SHOP FABRIC

DESCRIPTION

Heavy slub 16 oz. RHT is a beefy selvedge denim, woven with slubby yarns. Due to the weight and fabric structure, this denim needs some break-in time. But eventually this creates additional comfort, as well as contributes toward a high contrast fading with wear and wash. Once the denim has eased up, you’ll notice an increased range of movement and beautiful fading developing. The slubby yarns add depth and character to the denim and help create more refined contrast fading. Heavy slub 16 oz. RHT is woven by Collect Mills in Kojima, Japan, and is one of our two core fabrics in the ‘made in Japan’ line.

low tension O/W 12 oz. RHT

origin: Collect Mills (Japan)
SHOP FABRIC

DESCRIPTION

Low tension 12 oz. RHT can be considered a lighter version of our 14 oz. special #1 fabric. It has a similar loose weave construction with irregular yarns, and the same indigo cast has been used for the warp yarns. Besides the obvious weight difference, another main difference can be found in the garment treatment used for all styles made with this fabric; they have received the one-wash treatment, which means the garments have pre-washed in the factory. This reduces the break-in time tremendously, providing a comfortable fit from the very first wear day. When water penetrates cotton fibres, they tend to shrink and stabilize, and become more compact. This, combined with the loss of sizing (starch, that makes the fabric stiff on raw denim), creates a beautiful deep blue colour with hints of lighter tones, that will brighten up further by wear and wash.

13 oz. brown cotton selvedge
100% cotton
origin: Candiani Denim (Italy)
SHOP FABRIC

DESCRIPTION

Instead of the usual white colour, the weft of our 13 oz. brown cotton selvedge denim is dyed brown. This gives the fabric a darker appearance on the outside, helping it fade with a higher contrast when the white core of the indigo-dyed warp becomes visible with wear and wash. Additionally, when the fabric wears down to expose the weft on the outside (for example, when a small hole is developing), the brown becomes visible, helping it create a so-called ‘dirt effect’ and giving it an extra vintage touch. 13 oz. brown cotton selvedge is woven by Candiani Denim in Robecchetto con Iduno, Italy, and is one of our core fabrics in the ‘European made’ line.

SHOP FABRIC

special #2 15 oz. vintage indigo selvedge
100% cotton
origin: Candiani Denim (Italy)

SHOP FABRIC

DESCRIPTION

We’ve dubbed our 15 oz. vintage indigo selvedge denim the ‘special #2’, as it’s the second proprietary BENZAK fabric to enter our main collection. The fabric is a 3x1 right hand twill construction, and the raw vintage indigo colour represents a shade of indigo used for denim during 1960s. We've developed the special #2 denim with thicker weft yarns than the warp yarns; usually this is the other way around. This gives the fabric an extra soft interior resulting in additional comfort from the get-go. The selvedge colours are ‘Azurri’ (blue) and ‘Oranje’ (orange). As well as being an aesthetic feature, the custom selvedge pays homage to both collaborating companies’ national sports colours, Italy & The Netherlands. It's also a nod towards the long-standing friendship between BENZAK and Candiani. This denim has been created exclusively for BENZAK by Candiani Denim in Robecchetto con Iduno, Italy, and is one of our core fabrics in the ‘European made’ line.

15.5 oz. Kojima selvedge
100% cotton
origin: Collect Mills (Japan)

SHOP FABRIC

DESCRIPTION

The name of 15.5 oz. Kojima selvedge derives from its place of creation, the rural town of Kojima, situated in the Okayama prefecture and known for its blossoming denim industry. It's a traditional red cast Japanese denim woven at a low tension for extra comfort and breathability. This fabric has a high fading potential; over time the denim will mature into a bright blue hue with indigo nuances. The construction is slubby and uneven. This adds a subtle element of depth to the fabric and contributes to the unique evolution of the denim. The fabric was introduced in 2017 as part of our first denim fading contest and was added to the core collection the year after. Woven by Collect Mills, it’s also the first Japanese fabric ever used in our ‘European made’ line. It may be considered as the Japanese counterpart of our 15.5 oz. RCI selvedge, which shows a handful of similarities but also enough differences to co-exist.

SHOP FABRIC

DESCRIPTION

The name of 15.5 oz. RCI selvedge derives from its place of creation, Robeccheto con Iduno, a small village near Milan, Italy, and the hometown of Candiani Denim. It’s a classic red cast Italian denim woven with less tension creating an uneven structure that will become more apparent with wear and wash. The fabric has a high fading potential, typically found in these vintage-inspired denim constructions. 15.5 oz. RCI selvedge uses 100% organic cotton and is one of our core fabrics in the ‘European made’ line. It may be considered as the Italian counterpart of our 15.5 oz. Kojima selvedge, which shows a handful of similarities but also enough differences to co-exist.

13 oz. indigo eco selvedge
60% organic cotton, 24% recycled cotton, 16% blue seed cotton
origin: Candiani Denim (Italy)
SHOP FABRIC

DESCRIPTION

The indigo dye in the 13 oz. indigo eco selvedge has a beautiful mid-tone hue. Its 13 oz. weight makes for a perfect mid-weight denim for all year-round wear; it provides comfort from the very first wear-day. Candiani has woven this fabric with a unique selvedge colour pattern which stands out from the rest. It has been in our collection since 2017, and in 2022 we were able to upgrade the cotton to a mix of organic and recycled cotton, adding the word ‘eco’ to its name, and making this one of our most sustainable fabric options. The recycled cotton can be found in the weft and is created from old jeans and denim scraps; this gives it its ‘blue greyish’ tone, mostly visible on the inside. 13 oz. indigo eco selvedge is woven by Candiani Denim in Robecchetto con Iduno, Italy, and is one of our core fabrics in the ‘European made’ line.

FADE EXAMPLE

14 oz. easy fade hemp selvedge
63% organic cotton, 26% hemp, 11% conventional cotton
origin: Candiani Denim (Italy)
SHOP FABRIC

DESCRIPTION

14 oz. easy fade hemp selvedge has been woven using the same warp yarns as our 14 oz. easy fade LHT selvedge. The indigo that is used to dye the warp is characterised by its ability to fade a lot quicker than any other indigo. This shortens the break-in time and will provide a nicely faded look in a shorter period. The warp of the fabric (which accounts for 63% of the total composition) is entirely made from organic cotton. The undyed weft is spun from a combination hemp and conventional cotton (roughly 55%/45%). Hemp is known for its strength and breathability, and due to its cultivating methods, a lot more sustainable compared to cotton. The inside surface can be slightly rougher, but this only adds to the crispiness of the fabric, accelerating the high contrast fading capabilities even further.

10YA 15 oz. brown cotton golden selvedge

SHOP FABRIC

DESCRIPTION

In honour of our momentous 10-year anniversary, we embarked on a quest to create something truly exceptional, challenging Candiani to craft a denim unlike anything they had ever made before—a denim with a vintage, textured appearance.

When comparing Italian denim to Japanese denim, one notable distinction lies in their character. Italian denim tends to possess a smoother texture due to various post-weave finishes, while Japanese denim fabrics often showcase an uneven, 'wabi-sabi' structure. Both styles have their merits, as personal preference plays a significant role. At BENZAK, we embrace both types of fabrics to maintain a well-rounded denim offering.

For this particular project, we set out to create a denim fabric that would defy preconceived notions of how denim from a specific region should look. To achieve this, we embarked on the development process using the 15.5 oz. RCI selvedge as a base. Its construction already possessed a slightly uneven and low-tension quality, with a classic redcast indigo dye on the warp. We then replaced the weft with that of the 13 oz. brown cotton selvedge to enhance the vintage feel. Because this weft yarn is slightly thinner, the overall weight dropped from 15.5 oz. to 15 oz.

However, the true magic lies in the finishing—or rather, the absence of post-weave finishes. Apart from the necessary sanforization process to prevent excessive shrinkage, this fabric is essentially cut and sewn in its loomstate form. The result is an enchantingly uneven and hairy surface on the outside of the fabric, which turned out to be incredibly appealing.

As the crowning touch, we have finished the selvedge with a gold ID ticker. The selvedge itself is composed of seven threads: two white, three gold, and two white threads once again.

SHOP FABRIC

11 oz. neppy selvedge
100% cotton
origin: Collect Mills (Japan)
SHOP FABRIC

DESCRIPTION

Because of its light weight, the 11 oz. neppy selvedge is a perfect contender for anyone looking for a denim suitable for warmer temperatures. However, the main draw to this fabric would be it’s neppy structure. Neps are small pieces of accumulated cotton, that pop out of the surface, and give the denim its unique and irregular structure. This 100% cotton fabric is unwashed and feels stiff and crispy, which will loosen up with wear and wash. It has been woven on a shuttle loom with a wider reach, creating a wider-than-normal selvedge denim. To waste as less fabric as possible in cutting, we are only utilizing the selvedge on the front leg panels, and we’ve cut out the back leg panels from the middle of the fabric; this results in a half-selvedge, half-overlocked outseam construction.

14 oz. double indigo selvedge
100% cotton
origin: Collect Mills (Japan)
SHOP FABRIC

DESCRIPTION

14 oz. double indigo selvedge is characterised by both warp and weft being indigo dyed. This creates a super deep and dark look but will brighten up over time, as the indigo will slowly chip off both sides of the fabric. The construction of this Japanese denim is slightly irregular which creates depth on the surface and becomes more apparent with wear and wash. Double indigo fabrics tend to feel a bit stiffer in comparison with fabrics of the same weight; this is the result of the dyed weft. It might take a bit of time to fully break in this denim, but the evolution of a double indigo fabric is something we’d highly recommend experiencing at least once for any denim head.

100% cotton
origin: Candiani Denim (Italy)

SHOP FABRIC

DESCRIPTION

13 oz. black slub selvedge is full of character created by the black, slubby warp yarns, resulting in an uneven structure. Being sulphur dyed, the slubs will become more apparent with frequent wear, as they will fade in a similar way indigo would. The weft is also dyed black, but instead with an indanthrene system which emphasises a deep colour saturation and has a good lightfastness, keeping the colour dark from the inside.

Modal is developed from viscose, which is a semi-synthetic fibre made from cellulose, derived from wood. Tencel modal is a type of modal produced by Lenzing using sustainable resources. The fabric is constructed like a broken twill, which accounts for the interesting pattern and was originally invented to prevent leg twisting.
